Pattern Based System
Pattern Based System:
What is pattern based system?
A "grid" is placed or applied on a surface of object. After a family is designed in a grid the whole surface is designed with the same family or material.
The following video shows how a patterned based system works:

Creating a pattern based system
Start by creating a new "curtain wall pattern based" family. Next we want to bisect two opposite sides of the rig with a point, so place a new point at the midpoint of each line and assign an equidistant dimension to each point. (You may want to make the reference planes always visible)
Creating a pattern based system
Next host an additional point on top of the new points and move them upwards by assigning an offset parameter. Next connect all the points with a reference line (turn 3D snapping on) and host a new point on the midpoint of the connecting. Next set your work plane to the newest created point and create two lines, one horizontal, and one at a slight angle (turn 3D snapping off) and assign an angle parameter to the two lines. line of the vertical points and apply an equidistant parameter.
Now, Set your work plane to the angles line and load in your previous curtain panel model be sure to select the "Place on Work Plane" button and place the loaded component on the center of the point.
Now select your panel and edit its properties click the little square next to each of the parameters to create a new parameter in the system family (this links the parameters so you can adjust the parameters of the panel)

What
is a pattern base system?
When trying to create a pattern base system on Revit
you start by creating a curtain wall pattern based family and applying them to
a divided surface within the massing environment. You then create a new family
and that will then be a curtain panel pattern base, you can use a template that
you can modify for the different types of you would like to put on it.
Create then a basic framed panel within this
environment then start to define and make a panel. Use the modelling operations,
the standard in the conceptual massing environment. After this you click on the
create form button to get the options. Work within the panel environment just
to add a material to your structure ‘project’. Load it into the project that
you are wanting to move the pattern base to then send it to your saved project.
Then look at your 3D view of your original project that you initially started, then
select the surface of the existing drawing then go to the properties bar and
then under whatever shape you are using, you will see “family” as an option.
Click on that and it will load and apply the panel on to the surface or face of
your drawing.
You created a divided surface to host the panel and
then within the pattern based curtain panel family template you build all the
complexity for your panels and then when back in the mass environment you can propagate
it along its surface. And that is how you create a pattern base system. See link
